China’s Markets?

China is done for most likely 2020. The Chinese government is publicly stating that there are over 35,000 confirmed infections/cases (which cannot be trusted). Boots on the ground are saying the real number of infected is much higher (with some even claiming the figure is 1.5 million infected with countless diseased bodies being cremated daily which may well just be FUD). It is without question that there are between 140-250 million Chinese citizens currently sequestered in their homes in quarantined cities and large swaths of the country are ghost towns on lockdown with nothing coming in/out. I tend to split the difference between good/bad news, but the trending news from China has not been giving me any comfort.
Every time positive news breaks (e.g. Chinese factories reopening on the 10th, number of infected in Wuhan has already peaked, disease only fatal to elderly and babies, mortality rate of infected projected to be 2%, infection survivors build lasting antibodies to combat re-infection, etc.) it is inevitably followed by reversals (e.g. factories to “voluntarily” remain closed until March 1st, Wuhan infections based on “current data” projected to peak at least two weeks out, Chinese companies attempting to cancel commodities contracts, disease affects young and healthy alike, mortality rate of infected projected to be 5%-25% and requiring non-stop oxygen supply for 2 weeks, reinfection rate high as no lasting antibodies remain after infection to combat virus, etc.). This situation is by no means contained and is still developing in real time. China for all intents and purposes is now under martial law.

[2] July 30: Macau (5 min timer)

Today's map: Macau by Niccy94 (75)

Link to the challenge here | Deadline: August 1, 12.30 am UTC (8.30 am in Macau)
Hello! Today we're visiting Macau, quite an unique place- a former Portuguese colony, now a Chinese territory. It's very small, but it's surprisingly diverse- narrow roads, lavish casinos, tropical hills, there's a bit of everything. Alas, all the pictures are a bit old and grainy, but nothing too rural Australia-like. No photospheres.
This is the first Macau map we're featuring, and the first map by Niccy94 as well!
Congrats to Benica11 who topped yesterday's Czech map with 24994. A big result as it allows them to become our weekly champion for July! Congratulations!

Threw Together a Rough Concept for a Hitman 3

, as I would design it I guess. This is essentially just a few ideas of levels I threw together. Mainly with the assumption that this would be the climax game of the Providence Arc. It’s dumb in parts, but I hope it does sound interesting. Ha like anyone will even read this. I will note I was inspired by some others in other comments on posts, but I can’t remember their names so sorry.
Hitman 3 Level Ideas
Level 0: (Equivalent to Hawkes Bay and the training levels) Gulf of Aden Mission Goal: Secure a piece of plot related cargo, alongside assassinating a known international terrorist who is in the ship. Mission Security: Light Security, but still present to deal with the threat of pirates in the area. Mission Description: Infiltrating on a small skiff, in the darkness of night. Maneuvering up the levels of the lower ship till you reach the maze of cargo, with long and short lines of sight both represented, with a flashlight available to provide light. Upon reaching the bridge of the ship, you can get the location of both the plot cargo and the target, along with turning on the lights, illuminating the entire ship, and bringing the level into a second stage.
Level 1: London Mission Goal: Assassinate a Spy, a Businessman, and a Diplomat Mission Security: Lightly guarded in the open space, otherwise medium security. Mission Description: Slums of London, crowded streets where a meeting is about to take place. A Diplomat from Saudi Arabia, a Businessman from Mexico, and a Spy from Canada all will meet. The Area also is overseen by security of a Crime lord, who is not in it of themselves a target.
Level 2: Tel Aviv International Airport Mission Goal: Assassinate Sheik Salman Al-Ghazali Mission Security: It’s an Israeli Airport. The Plane is lightly guarded, but not very large. Mission Description: It’s an Airport, if you take too long, the Sheik’s plane will Prepare to take off where it will then be a rush to the plane, unless you have a Bomb on it.
Level 3: Tokyo Mission Goal: Assassinate a Cabal of Religious Figures in Japan Mission Security: The area outside the temple is relatively free to roam, while the temple is closed off outside of the main pathway, and heavily guarded Mission Description: There are two areas, the Temple and the City, the city is modern and relatively open, while the temple is mostly closed off and traditional. The Night is soon descending, and while all the targets start in the temple, all Five of them will move about the map into their own areas bringing along their security as the night descends and turns the outside into a neon night.
Level 4: Macau Casino and Hotel Mission Goal: Eliminate the Assassin hunting you, a Corrupt Bureaucrat with ties to providence, and the Owner of the Hotel and Casino, A Business Mogul and Crime Lord. Mission Security: While heavily guarded, large portions of the map are safe to walk around as 47. Mission Description: Large, Expansive, and focused on three levels at the top of the hotel, and one floor below of hotel rooms.
Level 5: Khandanyang Mission Goal: Assassinate Jin and Tren Po and Get the Information of the Partner’s Identities and Location Mission Security: Not only is the country extremely strict in their practices, making nearly all items illegal unless you are a role which would have said item. Many areas of the Map are heavily guarded, most of all, The Palace. Mission Description: 47 has infiltrated the Capital City of Khandanyang, the mission is to assassinate Jin and Tren Po, who have information on the location of the Partner’s next meeting. Starting in the City, the Palace looms over the map, heavily guarded, but with many points of infiltration.
Level 6: London (Again) Mission Goal: Kill the Partners Mission Security: Everything they have. Mission Description: The Streets of London. A Small, walk around area is available, before one may enter the Lobby of the Hotel where Providence’s Heads are meeting. Everything within is sleek, Modern, and towering above. Multiple open floors are available to enter at your own risk, leaving you a way to get up to the penthouse with stealth, or less so by going with the elevator after stealing a key to the area. The Penthouse has multiple large open windows to the outside, along with many balconies.
It towers above London below, as the rain outside begins to turn into a harsher and harsher storm as time goes by. Every Inch of the Penthouse is guarded, but there are small walkways along the side of the window, ever enough to get around through the multi floor penthouse, along with small corridors in between the walls. The Targets will all amass as one in the meeting room, but not before the guards check the room for any... Assassination Methods. “They are on alert, they are ready, but this is our chance, 47.”
-After that mission is actually finished, the Credits roll. Then Post-Credits scene with reason for further games-

[META] The Portugal of 1980 (LORE)

FINAL MAP

This post essentially builds off TheIpleJonesion’s fantastic lore, explaining the situation which Portugal and her former territories find themselves in during the early 1980s. It is broken down along geographic lines.

The Metropolitan (Continental Portugal and the Outer Island Provinces of the Azores, Madeira, Cabo Verde and São Tomé & Príncipe):

With the removal of the Salazar regime in 1954, Portugal transitioned into a military-dominated presidential republic. Liberal market reforms made by the democratically-elected Fraternity Party saw an end to state interventionism in the Portuguese economy and a move away from corporatist macroeconomic organisation towards capitalistic free-market economics. This transformed the predominately-agricultural Portuguese economy into an industrial powerhouse, as factories popped up across the continental provinces in what is now jokingly referred to as the ‘Portuguese Industrial Revolution’. As Portugal modernised its economy, it attained a developmental trajectory similar to that of the Asian Tigers IOTL. This was only helped by the extremely cheap importation of primary resources from Portugal’s former colonies in Africa, and the discount export markets which the escudo africano monetary area had established in these nations. Portugal’s economic ascension was accompanied by huge progress in the fields of education and infrastructure, as bridges and roads were constructed and continental illiteracy abolished.
Owing to its pro-business sympathies and dubious ties to the economic elite, the Fraternity Party ensured that no anti-trust measures were implemented as part of its economic reform strategy, allowing the influential ‘40 Families’ of Portugal’s south to expand their dominion over those sectors of the Portuguese economy that were privatised during the post-Salazar liberalisation. The result was an economic model that verged on plutocracy, as the anti-communist military conspired with powerful businessmen and corrupt Fraternity Party politicians to maintain the upper class’ hold on power. This alliance of convenience continued up until the late seventies when a cadre of disillusioned, left-leaning junior military officers led a mass of young conscripts to seize power in the infamous 1976 Carnation Revolution. The Revolution, which in many ways resembled the anti-Salazar coup 22 years prior, saw the passage of new anti-trust and anti-corruption laws after the democratically-socialist Movement for Democratic Unity’s (MDU) victory in the junta-supervised elections of 1977. Though the Revolution would establish a fairer two-party democratic system in which the Conservative Party (the successor to the Fraternity Party) would compete with the MDU in free elections, it also confirmed for a second time the military’s position as a powerful force in Portuguese politics. As such, despite the removal of plutocracy and the reinstatement of fair elections, the Portugal of the 1980s remains a “flawed democracy” according to most outside observer assessments.
Though this chaos certainly had a negative impact on Portuguese standards of living, the nation remains a dynamic economic force in Europe and an over-achiever when it comes to developmental outcomes. As the 1980s continue on, Portugal is beginning its transition away from heavy industry towards a stronger services sector while it signs special trade agreements with its partners in the European Common Market and continues to pursue close economic ties with its former colonies of Guinea and Angola. From the sparkling beaches of São Tomé & Príncipe to the luscious fields of northern Portugal and the windswept hills of the Azores, there is no doubt that the Republic has become quite the enterprising nation.

The Outer Metropolitan (Portuguese India, Macau and Timor-Leste):

Portuguese India:
Had the Indian subcontinent not fractured so easily in the late 1950s, it is difficult to see how Portugal would have been able to maintain any sort of presence in the territories of Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar-Haveli. The defeat of Indian forces in the Kashmir Conflict and the successful declaration of Dravidian independence after a bloody insurgency, however, created an opportunity for Portuguese policymakers. Years of economic development across Portuguese India and a deliberate policy of promoting an independent Portuguese-Indian identity strengthened Portugal’s claim to these territories, while deals signed with the US establishing an American naval base at Nova Goa and US protection over Portuguese India provided a strong deterrent. These gains were then solidified by deals with the Dravidian and Indian governments, which saw Portuguese sovereignty confirmed over Goa, Daman and Diu in return for Portugal ceding Dadra, Pani-Cola and Nagar-Haveli back to India, as well as the lending of strong military support to the Dravidians. Though there remains significant agitation across Portuguese India (now referred to as the Goa, Daman & Diu Province), Portuguese sovereignty over these increasingly productive and idyllic territories appears secure for the foreseeable future. What’s more, it is now not uncommon to see ethnic Indians roaming the streets of Continental Portugal as fully-fledged citizens. The long-desired union of Portugal to the Subcontinent finally appears complete.
Macau:
Macau is seen in the eyes of most as the crown jewel of Portugal’s Asian provinces. She is home to some of the most important banks in Asia and competes with Shanghai for the status of the financial capital of China. Not only that, but Macau competes with Bali, Jeju, Tokyo and Beijing for the most popular tourist destination in the Asian region, already being the destination of choice for the rich and famous, who flock to her many bars, casinos, prestigious restaurants and world-class designer fashion houses. The Macau of the 1980s is covered in stunning skyscrapers and jaw-dropping urban greenery. Indeed, the city boasts a population of nearly a million, with land reclamation projects having allowed for a vast expansion of the province’s urban domain. The city’s population includes tens of thousands of ethnic Portuguese residents, just as hundreds of thousands of ethnic Chiese now live in continental Portugal, being the second-largest ethnic minority community behind African migrants from Guinea, Mozambique and Angola, but ahead of Indian migrants from Goa.
At any rate, just as Macau has in many ways become the financial and touristic centre of Asia, it has also become a centre for intrigue. The unsuccessful Chinese attempt to seize Macau by force in 1969, for example, only saw a further upgrade of the province’s military defences, with the permanent deployment of an extra submarine to Macau Habour alongside thousands of additional troops and another fighter squadron. Meanwhile, the ‘Bloody Game’ that started in the late 1950s between Portuguese and Chinese spies, local casino syndicates, corrupt local politicians and the four main triad groups continues to this day, with the southern portions of Macau city being known for violent crime and a dirty underworld. Indeed, it appears that the province is as vice-ridden as it is glamorous.
Timor:
A series of bilateral agreements in the 1950s saw Timor-Leste recognised as integral Portuguese territory by the Indonesians, just as the peninsula came under separate US/Australian/SEATO military protection, thus securing Portuguese rule over the territory indefinitely. Despite this, prohibitive travel times and ticket costs kept Timor physically isolated from the rest of the Portuguese Republic until the mid-1960s, when she suddenly gained access to far more state support as the African colonies achieved independence and international travel became easier. The Timor of the 1980s remains a quiet corner of the Portuguese world, although it has grown increasingly successful as a tourist and natural resource hub.

The former African colonies (Guinea, Angola, Cabinda and Mozambique):

Guinea:
Having achieved her independence in 1965, the Guinean Republic maintained a slow but steady trajectory of economic development under close Portuguese supervision. Indeed, the nation remained remarkably stable throughout her first decades of independence, developing a fully-fledged democratic system over time which afforded it one of the highest standards of living among the continent’s independent states. Portugal’s close geographic proximity to Guinea, coupled with its near-identical struggle for democratic governance, has rendered the two nations close allies. Guinea remains the first port of call for Portuguese firms looking to establish a presence in Africa, with the nation functioning as the flagship model for Portuguese-African influence under the Silvestre Doctrine.
Angola (and Cabinda):
Though the Silvestre Doctrine had originally intended for the agricultural Ovimbundu people of Angola’s central plateau to dominate the Federal Angolan Republic post-independence (in a close alliance with the Portuguese), the unexpected strength of the rival Kimbundu people saw the two ethnic groups clash in a violent struggle for political power that lasted between 1964 and 1967. With Portuguese assets sustaining increasing damage during the bloody affair, Lisboa turned to its Kikongo allies in Angola’s north for assistance. United by its staunchly pro-Portuguese and anti-Communist leader from the nearby Ngbandi people of the then Belgian Congo, Mobutu Sese Seko, a powerful Kikongo army marched south and captured Luanda from the leftist Kimbundu militias. This placed Angola under the rule of Portugal’s Kikongo allies, who then turned to the Ovimbundu for additional political support, as well as the ethnic Portuguese and minority tribes of Angola’s south. Seko now rules Angola with an iron fist, using Portugal, the Ovimbundu, Portuguese-Angolans and the minority tribes to maintain power. His ties to Portuguese commercial interests have proven an immense asset for the Portuguese economy, which sees its manufacturing sector and domestic consumption fueled by cheap primary resource imports from Angola.
Using his ethnic ties to the north, Seko became a major player in the war for Congolese independence, leveraging this assistance to become the political kingmaker in the newly-independent Republic of Zaire. This has resulted in Zaire effectively becoming a joint Luso-Angolan puppet state, with its government ministries littered with Portuguese and Angolan advisors, and the nation having joined the escudo africano monetary zone.
Moreover, though it voted for independence in 1960, the Cabindan Republic was quickly subsumed into the Federal Angolan Republic as one of the conditions for an alliance between Seko’s Kikongo faction and the Portuguese. As a result, Luso-Angolan influence now runs from Luanda, past Zaire, into Cabinda and beyond towards the Republic of the Congo, making Angola one of the most powerful forces in the new Africa.
Mozambique:
The post-independence climate in the Mozambican Republic of 1965 resembled that of Angola at first. Rival ethnic groups clashed for power as election after election failed to yield clear results and cultural entities with little in common began to embrace armed struggle instead of the ballot. Unlike in Angola, however, Portugal was unable to salvage the situation and was forced to withdraw from the chaotic banana republic. Those ethnic Portuguese who had for centuries called Mozambique home largely fled to southern Angola or accepted government offers for free land in São Tomé & Príncipe, as Tanzanian-Arabian-backed Islamic militias fought for control in the north, and the African nationalist factions from the Shona tribes clashed with the leftist Shangaan in the south. Eventually, the Shona managed to secure national control, establishing a pan-African state under the dictatorial rule of Gondo Matombo. Without the support of sympathetic regimes in Rhodesia, Moscow or Beijing, the Free Nation of Mozambique is an isolated state. It maintains rivalries with Tanzania (as a result of Dodoma’s support for Salafist rebels in the north), North Rhodesia and Nyasaland (after the preceding Shangaan regime seized the Likoma and Chizumulu islands in 1966), South Africa and Rhodesia (for Mozambique’s support of radical pan-African insurgent groups) and Seko’s Angola (which obviously opposes the Matombo regime on ideological grounds). President Matombo’s chaotic economic policies have driven away foreign investors, while Mozambican civilians are organised en masse into autonomous units of the “African People’s Defence Militia” to defend against “Islamic subjugation, Boer segregation, Portuguese neocolonisation and the enslavement of the African people”. Sadly, it seems Mozambique’s violent decline managed only to produce the very worst kind of basket case dictatorship.
A huge thanks to guyfromvault11 for being an amazing teammate, to the mods for a season well-run, and to all the other players for making this such an engaging season. I can’t wait for the next one!

[EVENT] Portus Ostium

Macau since 1949:

Since the end of the Chinese Civil War, Macau has grown tremendously in regional significance, shifting from a valuable entrepôt to one of the largest hubs in the Far East. The vast majority of refugees who fled to the territory have been allowed to stay, with 150,000 having already secured territorial residency (the closest thing to citizenship for non-ethnic Portuguese in the overseas territories at present), bringing the total resident population up to 350,000 (the remaining 150,000 have ten-year work permits). Of the 300,000 residents who have arrived since 1939, approximately 100,000 have settled on the Macau Peninsula, 50,000 on Colaone Island, and 150,000 on the previously under-populated Taipa Island (see map as attached). This has left much of the territory covered in slums, although a central government-supported programme to provide interest-free mortgages to refugees and new residents has led to the establishment of medium-quality, high-density housing across much of Taipa Island and the Peninsula. Small scale industry and locally-owned businesses have also taken off across the territory, as migrants attempt to start a new life in the bustling city.
The Macau of 1957, therefore, finds itself with an affluent centre of business on the Peninsula, flanked by emerging neighbourhoods and slums in the south and east, a highly-populated emerging cityscape on Taipa Island, with a central nucleus of emerging neighbourhoods (predominately featuring high-density, apartment-style housing) surrounded on all sides by slums and small scale factories, and a still under-populated Coloane Island, which presently boasts some slums, farms, factories and traditional villages.
The vast majority of small scale industry in Macau consists of textiles manufacturing in factories set up by the migrants. That said, larger-scale industry has also emerged, including a major bicycle factory near the border with China and a rifle manufactory on the southern tip of the Peninsula. This is emblematic of the territory’s economic ascendance, as is the arrival of new waves of ethnic Portuguese, who have brought the European population of the territory up to 13,000 since 1949.

Commercial opportunities:

The signing of the Sino-Portuguese Free Trade Agreement (SPFTA) in 1956 has dramatically improved the economic prospects of Macau. Indeed, the near-complete removal of Chinese import tariffs on Portuguese luxury goods has resulted in the establishment of a number of luxury goods production facilities on the Peninsula, as well as the proliferation of dozens of prestigious vendors in the affluent portions of the isthmus. In addition to the basic textile manufactories set up by the migrants, a number of fashion outlets have also been established for upper-class visitors, and for deliveries to customers in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and Southeast Asia. Jewellers, shoemakers, watchmakers, tailors, cordwainers and bag markers have all set themselves up in the territory, where they create their products, sell them to visitors and also export them abroad. Distilleries have also become popular, with the territory developing a positive reputation for its fine, locally-distilled whiskey, rum, gin and baijiu. An emerging brand of dark rum, known as ”Ventos Orientais”, has grown particularly popular. The rum is recognised for its distinctive flavour, being the only major rum brand to use Timorese sugar. Tobacco companies have also established high-end stores on the Peninsula, where they sell a number of recognisable international cigarette and cigar brands.
Otherwise, with the significant reduction of Chinese tariffs on precision-made products, a number of manufactories have popped up on Coloane Island, producing measuring equipment, precision medical supplies and levelling tools.
The Banco de Macau, meanwhile, has left a permanent mark on the territory by becoming the first enterprise to construct a ‘skyscraper’ (as they’re being called) in Macau, building its new corporate headquarters on the western side of the Peninsula. It has been joined by the Macau-Beijing Investment Bank and the Banco Afro-Eurásia, which have also begun construction on smaller, albeit impressive skyscrapers. Regrettably for the Banco Português do Continente e Ilhas and Montepio Geral Bank, who do not have enough capital for a skyscraper, three-storey office buildings have had to suffice.
In many cases, these banks have been instrumental in financing the recent expansion of the Macanese economy. The Banco de Macau and the Banco Afro-Eurásia, however, have sought to increase their regional presence even further by expanding into Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore and Indonesia. The Banco de Macau, in particular, is expected to make major investments in Japan, Thailand and Indonesia in the coming years.

Tourism and entertainment opportunities:

The recent introduction of Western gambling to Macau, along with the Banco de Macau’s heavy investment in new casinos, has led to a proliferation of the gambling industry across the territory. Dozens of small to medium, high-end, Western casinos now dot the Peninsula, while a number of traditional casinos have emerged on Taipa Island. Along with the emergence of a luxury shopping culture, the new casinos have proven extremely popular with affluent visitors from China, Hong Kong, Japan, the West and Southeast Asia. Many new hotels are being founded on the Peninsula to meet this demand, as well as a new, game-changing casino known as Casino Lisboa, which shall open its doors in 1960. Quite expectedly, the proliferation of gambling across the territory has only poured fuel on the metaphorical fire that is the gambling syndicate rivalry. New syndicates are now competing for an increased market share as outside factions interfere with the rivalry (see: the banks and Triads) and older syndicates desperately battle to preserve their local hegemony. Already, this rivalry has been given a morbid monicker, becoming known as the ”Bloody Game (残忍赛)”. This name is quite deserved, given that syndicates of all sizes have gained a reputation for sabotage, death threats, murder and murky alliances with the Triads as their deadly rivalry spirals out of control.
Beyond the casinos, new bars, restaurants and nightclubs have been established across the territory, catering almost exclusively to high-end visitors and the Macanese elite. The combination of modern, dimly-lit bars, domestically-made liquor, prestigious fashion brands, international visitors and high-stakes games of poker have given Macau a distinct flavour, with the city increasingly being known as the ”City of Jazz (爵士城)”. Regular ferry trips between Hong Kong and Macau, coupled with daily/weekly flights to Tokyo, Beijing, Singapore, Manila, Shanghai and Bangkok are only improving this reputation.

Future infrastructure:

MAP
The huge population increase on the Taipa and Coloane islands have put immense strain on the intra-Macau ferry service. Hoping to alleviate this strain, the Macanese territorial government has announced a new project to connect Taipa Island to the Peninsula with a new bridge. Inspired by the Ponte de Liberdade in Lisbon, and designed by the same engineers, the bridge is expected to be completed by 1965 (marked in red on the map). The bridge is to be named in honour of the territory’s outgoing Governor, Joaquim Marques Esparteiro, being called the Ponte da Esparteiro.
Otherwise, recognising the strain which Macau’s rapidly-increasing population has had on the geography of the territory, a major land reclamation project is to be undertaken on both the Peninsula and Taipa Island. Zoning will take place ahead of time for the planned land, allowing preemptive property sales to help fund the project. Dutch engineers will be brought on for the project as a result of their vast land reclamation experience. Additionally, the Portuguese Navy is to assist with the project by providing auxiliary vessels where relevant. The new Peninsula-Taipa bridge will only extend across the stretch of water between the reclaimed land, with the connecting road that passes over the reclaimed land simply being raised several metres above the ground. (Land reclamation areas are marked in blue on the map, along with their planned year of completion).
Finally, in order to prevent a potential bottleneck of manufactured goods produced on Taipa Island from blocking Macau harbour and the Ponte da Esparteiro, a new industrial dock is to be constructed on the island, to be completed by 1964 (marked in orange on the map).

Vice and crime:

As previously noted, the expansion of the gambling industry has also spawned an intense rivalry between the syndicates. Indeed, the increased prevalence of vice across Macau has created an opportunity for the Triads, who already enjoyed a strong Macanese presence before the territory’s expansion, particularly on Taipa Island, the Peninsula casinos and in the slums/emerging neighbourhoods in the north. As the "Four Major Gangs (四大黑幫)” of Shui Fong, Wo Shing Yee, 14K and the Big Circle Gang have grown in importance, they have gained large footholds in the new neighbourhoods, where they run extortion rackets and loan shark operations, targetting small businesses, nightclubs and traditional gambling dens. Human trafficking has also emerged as a dangerous front, as the Triads seek to smuggle in illegal workers and, in the case of the nightclub sector, “waitresses”. Finally, the counterfeiting of patacas (Macau’s currency) has increased prolifically, as the Triads seek to use fake currency to make large bets in the casinos.
Though Indonesia’s provision of detailed intelligence on Triad drug smuggling operations in Macau has resulted in a massive crackdown on that particular area of organised crime activity, the Triads appear to be gaining ground on almost every other front, creating a complex interplay between Macanese businesses, rival gambling syndicates, law enforcement, local politicians and the Four Major Gangs. Hoping to assist the struggling territorial police in eradicating bribery, human trafficking, extortion, loan sharking, murder and counterfeiting, the SIS (basically the Portuguese FBI/secret police) and the Customs and Finance Intelligence Service (CFIS) have created a joint task force known as Operation Varrer Profundo (Deep Sweep). This operation will see the two agencies create large, permanent offices across the territory, cracking down on the Triads and illegal gambling syndicate activity by sending in hundreds of agents. Thus begins what many expect to be a years-long cat and mouse game between Portuguese authorities, the Triads, the gambling syndicates, corrupt politicians and the business sector

(DAILY RECATTM) [SUNDAY 1/26]
See list of prior RecatsTM here. Please visit the Hong Kong Protest Live Feed for up-to-the-moment news sourced from Hong Kong.
[NEW as of 2/5] Recommended English summary of Carrie Lam’s 2/5 press conference here re HK coronavirus status (courtesy u/toastedsquirrel).
Why it’s not a good idea to put a quarantine camp in Fai Ming Court (the red pin). (Map by Google Maps)

Recommended Viewing

* Stephen McDonell BBC videos of getting escorted out of Hubei after reporting on the hospital situation there.
* Apple Daily video of Wuhan couple testing positive in HK but attempting to escape. The wife has no masks and says she is “not afraid.” The husband stands wearing a mask behind the hospital worker. Police were called and escorted the couple back to the hospital.
* WSJ article re China possibly not recording all coronavirus deaths, labeling some as “severe pneumonia.” The non-corona virus deaths in China have inexplicably spiked and bodies are sent straight to cremation without funerals.
* Wuhan Citizen video re conditions in Wuhan. Another from Chen Qiushi.

New Laws, Legal Challenges, and Elections

* (Arrests and Trials) “Syndicate” members believed to have planned causing chaos and injury to HKers using, among other things, a samurai sword faced their charges today in court.

Wuhan Coronavirus

* (HK Cases) Re confirmed cases: 6th case (HK resident living in Wuhan and arrived via high speed rail like 4 other cases, see Xinqi Su thread). He also withheld his travel history at the hospital. Possible 7th case (husband of 3rd case). Possible 8th case (68yo HK resident in Fanling visited Wuhan and returned via Lo Wu). See Alvin L thread, Xinqi Su thread. Re suspected cases: 77 additional cases, 107 total (see Alvin L thread). A mainland professor and two mainland medic-admin went to hospital to get treated for their fever; they are suspected of intentionally combing to HK for treatment. Two parents failed to notify the hospital that they had worked in a hospital in Guangzhou, and now their 23 day old baby has been admitted to NICU with a fever and is suspected of having been infected.
* (Border) Any non-HK resident who is from Hubei or has been to Hubei in the past 14 days will be denied entry to HK. This announcement comes over 24 hours before the ban begins and after Hubei already been locked down. See Alvin L thread.
* (Other HK Closures) Kid’s places like museums, playrooms, toy library.
* (Healthcare Providers) HA Employees Alliance announce two-stage strike starting 2/3 if government does not meet its five demands: 1) close borders to travelers from mainland, 2) urge universal masks, 3) sufficient isolation wards, 4) follow up on runaways, 5) sufficient protection for medics (see Xinqi Su thread). Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital reportedly provides expired masks to medical staff. Running out of test kits.
* (Supplies and Transportation) Ngong Ping cable car stops operations. HK government requires health declarations to be filled out but did not collect the completed declarations (see Thomas Yau thread). Cathay Pacific reducing crew layovers in mainland.
* (Mainland China) Re Wuhan: 5 million Wuhanese escaped the city before it was locked down, 9 million remain. Of the 5 million Wuhanese who flew to HK, Macau, or Taiwan, most flew to HK. Conditions on the frontline by Wuhan doctor (see Aria Chen thread). Re travel and other restrictions: Tianjin, Xi’an, Shandong province (see Eunice Yoon thread), Hebei, Beijing schools closed. Re mainland generally: National Health Commission says virus is different from SARS and MERS and is now in person-to-person transmission stage (see William Yang thread). WeChat whistleblower function. Banning all wildlife animals sales until epidemic ends (see Eunice Yoon thread). Guangdong province mask order. Premier Li Keqiang appointed as head of CPC Central Committee leading group to combat Wuhan coronavirus. 9mo baby infected. WHO visiting Beijing (see Tedros thread). Re information blackout: Deaths that are not recorded as coronavirus spike, no funerals allowed, straight to cremation, labeled as “severe pneumonia” (see WSJ article). Wuhan cremation center cremated more than 30 bodies in one night, directly from hospitals, died of “pneumonia” but never tested for Wuhan coronavirus (see Muyi Xiao thread).
* (Macau) 3 additional cases confirmed, including one who had traveled from HK (see Xinqi Su thread). Effective 1/27, Hubei residents and visitors who have been to Hubei in the past 14 days: will be denied entry unless they have doctor’s certification of non-infection; will be denied entry into casinos; must leave or be put into isolation (“mandatory” and Macau will “use force if really necessary”). Government will announce number of newly admitted Hubei visitors every day. Masks and mental health support provided for students, start of new school year postponed. Opens Telegram channel for updates.

Pro-Establishment

* (Government Statements) Financial Secretary Paul Chan meets press wearing mask (most senior official thus far to do so). Health Secretary Sophia Chan maskless and insists none is needed for meeting press. PRC National Health Commission presser did not mention masks (see Xinqi Su thread). Dr. Gabriel Leung apologizes for his “can’t talk with mask on” remark and reaffirms that citizens should use masks and eyeglasses/goggles.
* (Police) In Mong Kok: A live round fired was found in Langham Place at the end of the night. Unknown new weapon, telephoto lens, new riot shield. (Meanwhile, healthcare workers are not provided sufficient masks.) In Tuen Mun: No duty police in Tuen Mun station. In Fanling: But riot police putting down the protest at Fai Ming Estate in Fanling have surgical masks to wear.
* (Statements re Border) HKU microbiologist Yuen Kwok-Yung wavers on border issue.

Protestors (Anti-ELAB and Coronavirus)

* (Anti-Epidemic Five Demands) 1) Employers must provide masks for employees and visitors. 2) No business trips to mainland. 3) Flexible work schedule. 4) Allow work-from-home. 5) No entry for travelers originating in mainland.
* (Fai Ming Estate Quarantine—Fanling) This is the first Wuhan coronavirus-related protest in HK. Locals took matters into their own hands and blocked roads in protest of a quarantine camp or medic dormitory being set up in Fai Ming Estate in Fanling. Over 200 riot police showed up to “keep the peace.” A riot police officer disregarded his commander several times to stay calm and not charge the locals. North District Councillors were on scene to de-escalate the situation but locals would not compromise. The district shares a border with mainland China and takes the brunt of all negative effects of mainlanders. The locals now believe that the HK government is, yet again, foisting mainland problems onto the North District. Although the government claimed that Fai Ming Estate had yet to become a quarantine, it appears that some of the units have been furnished (video). Locals set the lobby of one block of Fai Ming Estate on fire (video). As the situation escalated, reporters were ordered to leave and be searched on the way out (see Jessie Pang thread). See Xinqi Su thread, Timothy McLaughlin thread, Ezra Cheung thread, HK Free Press article.
* (Mong Kok LNY—Portland Street) A live round fired was found in Langham Place at the end of the night. Back for Day 2 of LNY gathering with hawkers. More people are heard chanting for independence. Boris Johnson and Kim Jong Il impersonators joined the fun. A small umbrella formation was suddenly tackled by police, but locals continued to build barriers (here). Some locals were chased by police into a mall but mall security closed the doors on the police. Some reporters were intimidated and pepper sprayed, and locals were also tackled and pepper sprayed. The proprietor of a stinky tofu stall complained that the police firing pepper balls at LNY revelers has been detrimental to her business. Another stall proprietor complained that the police have shown up two nights in a row on what should be a very profitable season, waited for customers to sit down, and then would chase the customers away. Teargas buffet (here). At one point, after some individuals threw some objects at the police, the police launched a barrage of teargas, one of which hit someone in the neck. Stop-and-search happened en masse. First aiders were also targeted by police. It was reported that a riot police groped a female NBC reporter’s chest (see Ezra Cheung’s thread re journalist Jasmine Leung) and would not provide an explanation. Instead, he pepper sprayed the reporter and a first aider blocked the pepper spray. was See Jasmine Leung thread, Razven thread, Panda thread.

Private Resolutions

* (Silent Majority) The banner of a pro-HK legislator who won in November 2019 was slashed. Next to it is a banner of a pro-Beijing candidate encouraging the “silent” “majority” to register to vote and not remain silent.
* (Mong Kok) Man quarreled with and was attacked by black clad individuals, then threatened reporter who was photographing the scene, demanding that photos be deleted.

Neutrals

* (Businesses) Ocean Park and HK Disneyland close.

Mapping "Portuguese" Macau

Hey guys looking for some help. I'm trying to create an interactive map of all that is Portuguese in Macau. You're probably thinking: come on guy, look in ANY travel guide! Ok, I know but I'm also looking for more.
Of course I want to hear about restaurants, bars, Catholic churches, schools and museums tied to Portuguese culture (travel guide stuff) but I'm also interested very specifically in hotels, restaurants, cab services, social clubs, casinos WHATEVER, where you can reliably speak in Portuguese. Essentially, I want to string places, locations, experiences where straight from the airport/ferry you could navagate around speaking and experiencing the MOST Portuguese possible.
Depending on how the project develops there might be credit or even compensation of active collaborators. Thanks!

TAC economics - money spent on gems is money lost forever

Many people say that virtual gacha games are a form of gambling. The truth is, virtual gacha games are actually WORSE than gambling. If you gamble at a Macau or Vegas casino, you can choose to stop playing at almost any point in time and cash out your chips back into money (side note: in terms of virtual casinos, cashing out is typically not as straightforward to do than in real life casinos). However, if you choose to convert some of your real life money into virtual gacha currency, such as TAC gems, that money is gone the moment you make the conversion. You will not be allowed to cash those gems back into real life currency outside of marginal cases such as fraud, when as someone stole your credit card credentials and bought gems with it. It’s like you are spending money to buy a license to gamble in the virtual gacha, and after you have bought the license, it does not matter whether you “win” or or “lose” in the gacha, you are not going to get your money back regardless of the outcome. Additionally, you are only getting the virtual items for as long as the game exists and people keep playing it. Which is typically a time span of a few years at best.
The most important rules about gambling, in my opinion, also apply to spending money on virtual gacha:
  1. Never gamble money you can not afford to lose. This is especially important in gacha because you lose everything immediately the moment you spend it.
  2. Never gamble with someone else’s money. Avoid incurring gambling debt to others. This is a slippery slope which will end up very badly if you start going downhill.
  3. You should set up a monthly entertainment budget. Some people prefer to use a "gambling budget", but I prefer calling it "entertainment budget" because I like to include Steam sales games, digital video games purchases, Spotify subscription, Netflix subscription, etc. all into the same budget. Basically, everything non-tangible and virtual which can not be sold second hand to get a part of the money spent back after you have no use for the stuff anymore. How large should the budget be? I personally recommend setting it between 0 currency units (low) - maximum 5% of your monthly income after tax, employment deductions, living expenses such as rent, food, electricity and water (high). So if you get something like 200 euros disposable income monthly student budget after paying for your rent, food, electricity, etc., I recommend spending maximum 0.05 x 200 = 10 euros per month on digital goods and services, such as virtual gacha games. My logic here is that if you lose 5% of disposable income, you should not incur debt, you should not get into financial life problems, and you should not be overly worried about “sunk cost fallacy” that you have spent such massive amounts of money on a video game that you mentally feel like you should be playing it 24/7 “to get your money’s worth".
And a few important rules about addictive behaviour and getting hooked into video games to the point where it is harmful also applies:
  1. If you are ignoring your life such as daily work, studying for exams, taking care of your loved ones, etc. due to playing a video game such as TAC, you should take a break from playing the game for 2-3 days and think about your life choices. Maybe you should e.g. think about switch jobs or try to work things out in an unhappy relationship situation rather than try to escape those real life problems into a virtual world instead. Escapism is not a solution, it’s just a form of avoiding your problems, which is procrastination at best, destructive ignorance at worst.
  2. If you get super angry at people interrupting your gaming session(s), that’s a warning sign of a gaming addiction. You should take a break of playing the game for 2-3 days. Relax, meditate, do tai chi, do some mindfulness exercises, whatever helps you relax and calm down and feel good about yourself and your current life situation. Personally, I recommend mindfulness exercises.
  3. If taking a break for 2-3 days feels impossible and unbearable, you have most likely already developed a gaming addiction. If it's a super serious gaming addiction, you may need outside assistance (e.g. people close to you) to help you overcome it. Mobile games are especially notorious for developing gaming addictions, because you are carrying the mobile device everywhere with you. That’s like someone addicted to slot machines having a slot machine always in their pocket. Be careful!
Now, if after all this is said, you still want to spend some money in virtual dacha game currency to keep on playing the dangerously addictive mobile game called TAC, what are your best options?
First of all, you should always do the 500 gems for 10x unit summon. It’s stupidly good value. But if you are an active player, you should have enough gems for that from dailies and stuff, so you will have to spend the bought gems on something else entirely because of the once per banner restriction of the 500 gems for 10x summon.
Smallest budget: 50 paid + 250(?) free gems for roughly 1 euro/pound/US dollar. Deal available once per calendar month.
Good:
Bad:
Recommended uses:
Small budget:
Monthly subscription of 300 gems now + 100 gems per day for 30 days for around 6-7 currency units.
Good:
Bad:
Recommended uses:
All the uses above plus the following:
Medium budget:
Gem bundles using the free gems per month bonus. Choose one according to your monthly gaming budget limitations. Don’t go over the gaming budget limit even if you would get a “better deal” for spending more. It’s a slippery slope down which can lead to life problems, addiction and debt.
Recommended uses:
Large budget:
The largest gem bundle. It has the largest percentage bonus of free gems per unit of currency spent.
Not recommended:
Chest bundles. The chest bundles we have had so far have had poor ratios of stuff per units of currency spent. You are typically better off buying a mid-sized gem bundle using the once per month free gems bonus.
NOTE: The chest bundles might get better in the future. So things can change. Don't get too hooked up on the idea that chest bundles are always bad forever.
EDIT: Many people on this subreddit have said that I am a "pro-spending advocate". I don't think that is true. What I am trying to do in these economics posts is to allow medium and large spenders (like me) choose better where they should be spending their gems after the "obvious" purchases (e.g. 500 for 10x unit summon, 300 for 10x gear summon) have already been exhausted. Impulse purchases should always be avoided, so my posts tend to be about a more rational analysis of what you get with what you spend, and making informed comparisons between the options A, B and C.
